According to the World Book Encyclopedia, Seychelles is pronounced "say-shells". The Seychelles is a British dependency of 92 islands covering 145 square miles. They lie in the Indian Ocean 700 miles northeast of Madagascar. A French or Creole dialect is spoken. Coconuts, cinnamon, patchouli, and vanilla are grown in the volcanic soil. From the mid 1700s, the French held the Seychelles until the British took them in 1794.
